Tournament History
The roots of the Thanksgiving Tournament date back to November 2012 at Lost Creek Park. Initially, it was an informal, two-team match following the regular Sunday format—no fixed duration, official rules, registration, or referee. Food was part of the day, but far from organized; a player would donate meat to barbecue, and members would cycle between playing on the pitch and eating at the sideline.
To eliminate the monotony of the standard two-team setup, founding members like Philo proposed shifting to a structured, highly competitive 7-a-side tournament format. Launched officially in 2014, the new event required pre-registration, randomized team draws, and an open invitation for families and friends to attend. It has since evolved into a flagship family event complete with food, spectator activities, and high-stakes soccer.
Competition Format & Rules
The tournament operates on a pure round-robin point system with no immediate knockout stages:

Points: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

Standings: The team with the highest point total at the end of the schedule wins the title.

Tiebreakers: Goal difference determines ranking if teams tie on points. If records remain identical, teams play a 20-minute extra-time period or proceed directly to a penalty shootout (as agreed upon by captains or ruled by the head referee).
Registration & Roster Rules

Timeline: Registration opens in October (one month prior) and is free of charge.

Eligibility: Priority is given to active Uhuru members. Non-members are added on a first-come, first-served basis if spots remain.

Squad Size: The optimal layout is 4 to 5 teams of 7 players (28–35 total registered players). If registration exceeds 35, squads can carry up to 2 substitutes (maximum squad size of 9). Substitutions are unlimited during matches, with 7 players fielded at a time.

Commitment & Penalties:

No-Show Rule: Withdrawing after the registration deadline without cause incurs a $100 fine and a suspension from the next official Uhuru tournament.

Late Arrival: A team must field a minimum of 5 players to start a match. Late-arriving players face a $50 fine and a 2-game regular season suspension.

Forfeits: Any team unable to field at least 5 players at kickoff automatically forfeits, awarding 3 points and a victory to their opponent.

Tournament Day Schedule
All matches take place on a single day, kicking off at 9:00 AM and running 6 to 8 hours (concluding around 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM).

Match Duration: 40 minutes per match (20-minute halves) with a 5-minute halftime break.

Match Sequencing: The schedule sequence is generated randomly using the Team Generator app to ensure fairness and prevent intentional late arrivals.

Rest Periods: Teams playing back-to-back matches receive a mandatory 10-minute rest extension before their next kickoff. (Stat note: Historically, the team drawn into the single non-back-to-back slot has captured the title in 6 out of 6 tournaments!)
The Player Draw
The official player draft takes place at Lost Creek Park two weeks prior to tournament day.

Randomized Selection: Following an controversial inaugural draft in 2014—where a paper-and-hat draw created a dominant team that swept the tournament conceding only one goal—the club adopted the Team Generator app. All team selections made by the app are final; no manual adjustments are permitted. Favorite teams on paper frequently fall early, creating legendary "giant-killing" upsets. Rosters reset entirely every year.

Team Branding & Identity: Once assigned, each squad selects a unique team name, captain, jersey color scheme, and creative player aliases for their kit prints.

Tactical Prep: Because every team plays every other roster in the round-robin, captains can game-plan against all opponents two weeks in advance. The exact sequence of matches is revealed on tournament morning.

The entire tournament is hosted on neutral ground at Lost Creek Park in Sugar Land:

Secondary Pitch (LC 6): The primary Sunday home ground, marked specifically for tournament use when LC 11 is unavailable.

The Championship Trophy
For the first two seasons of the Thanksgiving Tournament, no physical trophy was awarded to the champions—the title was won purely for bragging rights.
That changed in 2016, when the first official trophy was presented to the champion squad, Estama. Since then, a perpetual trophy has been awarded to every winning team. Following tradition, the physical trophy is held and displayed by a member of the reigning championship team until a new champion is crowned the following season.

Golden Boot: Awarded to the tournament's top goalscorer.

Most Valuable Player (MVP): Awarded to the player whose performance made the biggest impact on their team's overall tournament run.

Best Player: Recognizes the player displaying the highest overall technical skill, tactical intelligence, and consistency throughout the tournament.

Official Tournament Rules
1. Match Schedule & Timing

Kickoff: The Thanksgiving Day tournament begins promptly at 9:00 AM.

Order of Play: Starting fixtures are randomly determined by the Team Generator app.

Match Duration: Each game runs 40 minutes total, divided into two 20-minute halves with a mandatory 5-minute halftime break.

Rest & Transition: Teams playing back-to-back receive a 20-minute rest extension before their next kickoff. If neither team played in the immediately preceding game, a 10-minute transition break is given.
2. Roster, Starting Lineups & Forfeits

Squad Size: Matches are played 7-a-side with up to 2 discretionary substitutes per team.

Minimum Lineup: A team must field at least 5 starting players to begin an official match.

Forfeits: Teams unable to field 5 players at kickoff automatically forfeit. A forfeit results in an automatic 2–0 victory and 3 points awarded to the non-forfeiting team.
3. Attendance & Disciplinary Fines

No-Show Fine: Any registered player who fails to show up incurs a $100 fine, a suspension from the next Uhuru tournament, and a 1-month suspension from regular Sunday play at Lost Creek.

Late Arrival Fine: A registered player not on the pitch when their 7-man starting lineup commences play faces a $50 fine and a 2-game regular-season suspension.
4. Tournament Standings & Tiebreakers

Championship: The team accumulating the most points by the end of the round-robin is crowned champion.

Tiebreakers: Goal difference decides rank when teams tie on points. If two teams remain tied on points and goal difference, they will play a 20-minute extra-time match or go straight to a penalty shootout (as agreed upon by team captains or ruled by the head referee).
5. In-Game Rules & Disciplinary Cards

Referee Authority: All referee calls are final. Only team captains may approach the referee to request clarifications or appeal a dispute.

Yellow Cards: Results in a 5-minute sin-bin ejection for the offending player. No substitutions are permitted during the 5 minutes (team plays a man down).

Red Cards: A straight red card results in immediate ejection from the match and a 1-game suspension covering the team’s next tournament fixture.

Handball Rules:

No automatic goal is awarded for handballs.

Intentional Handling within 4 Feet of Goal Line: Awarded as an automatic goal, and the offending player receives a 3-minute sin-bin suspension.

Unintentional Handling on the Goal Line: Resulting in a penalty kick taken from 25 yards out. Ball-to-hand vs. hand-to-ball situations are judged solely at the referee's discretion.

6. Pitch & Equipment

Games take place on a small field setup using small goals. If the primary small field is unavailable, temporary demarcations will be set up on an available pitch.
Referees & Officiating
Referees participate on a voluntary basis and are drawn primarily from within the Uhuru membership to ensure familiarity with the tournament's unique atmosphere and rules. To prevent claims of bias, multiple referees are utilized across the day whenever possible. Officiating leans recreational and lenient while enforcing safety, order, and sportsmanship.
Powers & Duties of the Referee

Suspending or terminating matches for rule infringements or external interference.

Stopping play for serious injuries and ensuring injured players step off the pitch before restarting.

Allowing play to continue if an injury is minor or if playing advantage benefits the offended team.

Issuing yellow/red cards to discipline players and removing team officials who fail to act responsibly.
Duties

Enforcing the Laws of the Game and acting as official timekeeper and scorekeeper.

Ensuring any player bleeding leaves the pitch until the bleeding is fully controlled.

Restarting matches after stoppages and submitting official match reports covering scores, substitutions, and disciplinary actions.
Prizes & Recognition
In keeping with the amateur spirit of the club, no direct cash prize money is awarded to winning teams. However, official corporate sponsors and individual donors frequently provide gifts for participants, such as custom t-shirts, gift cards, or small cash awards (capped at $20). Champions are also honored with official commemorative medals, as established by the 2019 champion Giant Killers.
